History of Isaac Wing

a little history...

The Isaac Wing house was named after one of the 'grand old men' of Bayfield. Moving to Bayfield in 1872, he was the Receiver of the US Land Office. By 1883, Isaac Wing stood at the head of the real estate holders, having in his possession hundreds of town lots and thousands of acres of pine lands. With the arrival of the railroad, his holdings increased in value.

The Isaac Wing House was built in 1872. Isaac Wing was ever willing to share his assets with the community. Among his good works were the donation of new cemetery ground, buying firefighting suit for his namesake - the Wing Hose Company #1, donating a town lot for the Methodist-Episcopal parsonage, and establishing a scholarship fund at the Washburn High School. The High School was built on land sold to the district by Isaac Wing. The first scholarship was awarded in 1895 and continues to be awarded every year.

Isaac Wing passed away in 1907, but his impact lives on. In the town of Port Wing, which carries his name, the old Lutheran Church has the bell he donated and the Security State Bank has his office chair on display with a memorial plaque.
